Default GB's Rolling Chassis

What started as a simple quote for a 700R4 conversion kit and a set of axles for a 79' Scout II turned into a complete rolling chassis with a reconditioned body tub. Since there ended up being quite a few pictures taken during the building of the chassis I thought I would post up a small build-up of it. This chassis is set up for SUA(spring under axle) with reverse shackle and front/rear swaybars. Several new prototype parts are shown on this build and can be purchased if anyone would like to build their Scout similiar to this one. IH Only North can also build anyone a custom chassis and have it shipped out to you just like this one which is headed to Missouri.

Specifications:

4" Skyjacker Springs
CPT 6" Reverse Shackle Kit
Bilstein shocks
CPT Front Swaybar Kit
CPT Rear Swaybar Kit
CPT SUA Ubolt Plates
CPT 5/8" Ubolts
TSM Rear Disc Brake Kit
CPT Bumpstops
CPT 5" Shackles(rear)
CPT Stainless steel brake lines
RuffStuff Diffy Covers
4.10 Gears
Auburn Gear L/S
Yukon 4340 Alloy axles
Blackwood Labs GM 700R4 Conversion kit
B&M 700R4 Transmission
B&M Shifter
NP208 Transfer Case
33x12.5x15 BFG Mud Terrains
2" Body Lift
Energy Suspension Body/Spring Bushings
33 Gallon fuel tank

Now for the build. We started with an existing parts Scout, disassembled it down to a bare frame, and then started the cleaning.

With the frame in the shop it was ready to start fabbing and bolting on products. We some what jump ahead here as not too many pictures were taken during the assembly of the chassis as it is basic work and has been documented elsewhere on this site.

Darren started fabbing one of our custom crossmembers for the 700R4 conversion.

Rear suspension all setup.

TSM rear disc brake kit installed with Dutchman Alloy Axles.

A close up of our new CPT SUA ubolt plates.

Mock-up engine installed with the Blackwood labs adapter and B&M 700R4 transmission.

Darren finished up the heavy duty crossmember and welded in the mounts to the frame.

These strut rod mounts will help keep the weight of the engine off of the bellhousing of the 700R4. Together with the lower pan struts we shouldn't have to worry about the bell housing ever cracking.

With the transfer case on Darren notched the crossmember for driveshaft clearance.

The front swaybar installed.

These are the lower pan strut mounts. these come factory on GM trucks. Darren modified the existing GM struts and made little brackets that bolt onto the oilpan rail.

We also used a factory GM transfer case strut rod to help keep deflection down to a minumum.

Clearance is tight between the GM flywheel cover and Blackwood adapter so the 700R4 has the thread drilled out and bolts running downward with custom ground nuts.

Gussets were added to the rear suspension hangers to add strength.

Rolling chassis complete.

A NP208 transfer case was completely rebuilt with new bearings, seals, and chain.

The body tub needed a new quarter panel due to a previous collision. With the quarter panel off Darren treated and undercoated the inside quarter panel area.

This tub has a very clean front floor so no rust repairs were needed.

However the rear floor had a few rust holes in it so we replaced the back 2/3 of it.

Tub completed waiting to be mounted to the chassis.

That rolling frame was sure impressive, lots cool details that are hard to capture in a few pictures. I really liked how the RS setup and the sway-bar were integrated. Lots of work put into this project.

Thanks Guys!

Here are a few more last pics with the tub bolted down.

Once more weight is added to the rear the shackle angle will be angled toward the rear.

To make it as easy as possible for Gregg we installed studs into the transfer case and mounted the transmission adapter to it and suppled the correct metric bolts.

We packed up all the parts and got the Scout ready for its long journey out to its new home in Missouri.

For transportation of the rolling chassis we used D&G Transport LLC ( D & G Auto Transport LLC Homepage ) based out of Eunice, Missouri. The owners Danny and Gwen Ross are great people to deal with and have a very reliable vehicle transport service. D&G has very reasonable prices since no broker is involved and Danny doesn't mind if the vehicle you need moved doesn't run. You can contact Danny or Gwen at D&G Transport by calling toll free 1-800-535-4533 or 1-417-932-5217. Please be sure to tell them that you got there contact information from IH Only North.
