And for a long over due update......

Darren removed the front suspension brackets in preperation for the CPT reverse shackle kit.

The fangs were set into place. When mounting the fangs you want the leading edge of the fang to be no further forward than the front frame rail if you intend to keep the stock bumper(which we do).

On a side note we noticed another difference in the frame of this 810 compared to later Scout II's. Normally there is an oval hole in the frame in this location used by the factory to properly align the frame rails when welding the frame together. This early frame does not have the hole.

With the fangs tacked into place the springs were hung and axle housing set in place.

In preperation for the knuckle turning the welds on the 'C's were ground off.

Darren then moved the jack stands to under the axle so the holes for the reverse shackle tube could be located. To properly load the suspension for proper placement of the holes IH cylinder heads were stacked in order to mimic the weight of a completely assembled Scout. 2"x4" wood spacers were also used between the leaf spring and the frame to properly space the leafs. With all this performed, holes were drilled in the frame and then the sleeves were welded in place.

With the sleeves welded in place the shackles were able to be installed completing the reverse shackle kit.

Even though this axle assembly was recently rebuilt by another shop and had very low miles we still needed to verify that all the parts were in good shape.

Good thing we checked as we found multiple problems. The axle ujoints were a rusty mess and had to be replaced along with the new wheel bearings and races that were installed backwards. The rotors were also replaced with new as they were near minumum thickness.

A Yukon 4.56 ring/pinion was installed along with a brand new PowrLok.

4* shims were welded to the perchs for final setting of the pinion and castor angles.

With the arrival of the Vintage Air a/c components we were now completely ready to mount the HVAC unit under the dash.

The slim controller will take up little space in the dash.

The unit we chose was Vintage Air's newest setup called the Magnum IV. With its contoured design it mounts to the Scout's firewall while still clearing the transmission hump. With the units larger size we will be able to mount four vents in the dash instead of the normal three.

A new quarter panel was set on the fabrication table so Darren could start the mock-up of the flush fuel filler assembly that's being installed.

This is the filler hole and cap that we will be using. Its machined from steel with a paintable pop-up cap.

A breif mockup of the qurter panel and filler hose.

Filler hole tack welded in place.

Once tacked up we tested the fit of the cap.

The cap will be ground down to the contour of the quarter panel for a smooth, flush fit.

A view from the backside of the quarter panel.

The inside of the inner quarter panel got sanded down and then sprayed with undercoating. Areas that were going to get spot welded were taped off.

The endcap was pinched welded to the end of the quarter panel.

Once cool the quarter panel was cleaned and then undercoated before installation.

But before we could install the quarter we needed to install a mount for the charcoal canister so Darren fabricated the mount shown below. With the quarter panel installed the charcoal canister is nicely tucked away but still serviceable.

The quarter panel was hung and then spot welded into place.

With a final decision on the dome light Darren was able to finish off the cage by cutting, dimpling, and then welding in the final roll cage strips.

Setting up of the a/c and heater hoses can be a chore. Darren started out by laying out all the parts pieces.

With our hose crimper we are able to make our own a/c lines.

With the bulkhead fittings installed the a/c and heater hose could be cut for fit. We used high quality silicon hose under the dash as when the Scout is completed the last thing we want to have to do is pull the Vintage Air system out for a coolant leak due to cheaper quality hose.

Since this Scout is going to have electric fan, power windows, power locks, and a bunch of more electronic goodies we opted to wire this Scout with one of our Kwik Wire 22 circuit wiring kits.

The main fuse panel mocked under the dash on the firewall for optimal placement.

The hitch that was welded to the frame was removed.

We're using a Dynomax Ultra Flow X muffler in this project. It has a built in X type crossover built into the muffler. Not only do we save weight by using one muffler we still get the performance of dual exhaust.

Darren started out by running the front half of the exhaust system.

The new CPT Swaybar and CPT Bumstops are laid out in preperation for install.

I would like to see some frontdrive line pic's when avaliable. I know the 700r4 has a lot of pan sticking out on the passanger side, maybe with NP208 transfere case its not an issue. Also does the B&M transsmission come with a breather tube on the outside of the case? Can't see as the tranny is black

One of the reasons why we went with the "fullsize" 208 transfer case was for this reason - to get the driveshaft away from the pan area as much as possible. If a whole new complete front axle were to go in we would have made it a driver side drop.

If you look at the top of the trans in the picture there is a white tube coming out the top. That is the breather.

What a great project, Now that Jeff has me connected to this site I'll put together a folder of the '72 frame off that I'm doing - - thanks to a lot of help from Jeff!!! One question I have to ask is: what is the souce for that gas cap? I'd really like to put that on mine and I'm at the stage where I'd need to do it now as we're just about ready to go to paint. Info on it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

Alan,

Mark happen to call today and told me that the fuel filler cap is from Watson's Streetworks. I searched on their site and found it - Aluminum Trim Custom Cars Classic Hotrods Streetrods-Watsons StreetWorks . Click on the link and scroll down and you will see it.

Jeff

This project has been sort of on the back burner but is scheduled to be worked on again in the next week or two. We are waiting for a few custom order parts(like the seats and some stereo equipment) and once they arrive we will be able to continue on. So stay tuned!

Better late then never we finally got back on this build. With just about all the required parts that we needed delivered we were back to work at full steam!

We started with the the mock up of the seats. The rear is a bench with bucket style uppers.

Were using electric power seat bases. These bases have a ton of travel both forward and aft and tilt or up and down. Definitely lots of adjustment!

A custom center console was designed and mocked up. Started with a regular old box.

And ended up with this design. Some adjustments are going to be made but ultimately this is how it will be shaped. Plan is to build a frame for the console with wood sides. It will then be covered with the matching seat material. It will look real trick when its done. The console is going to have a built in ice chest and a dry storage area.

As we make design changes we have been using the mock-up center console to see how it will look. The Heat/Air controller is going to be mounted in the center console along with the door lock and power window switchs.

Some stereo equipment arrived.

Firewall wire loom covers were installed.
