Scout II SOA + R/S

Thought I would post up some pics of a typical spring over axle conversion performed at IH Only North. We almost always perform a reverse shackle conversion at the same time. These spring overs use all CPT products available on our online store.

This particular build had an OX Locker installed as well as a Chevy front brake conversion which is extremely stronger than the factory Scout disc brake setup(and cheaper).

Been needing a push to SOA

& you've pretty well convinced me to go highsteer instead of drop drag, I'm still not RS 'friendly' tho'. I do like the way the 'fangs' don't hang down, like some I've seen, and the fact you cross-brace 'em w/a tube.

What's the skinny on the bowtie brakes? How are they stronger?

Bigger piston bore & pad 'swept' area? We talkin' DIY, on the brake install?

Attention to Details & Quality of Build. You do nice work Jeff! Thanks for sharing, in more ways than one.

Those are some great photos....I am really thinking about doing the exact same thing to my '74 Scout II Cabtop. However, my only concern is that my welding skills aren't up to the standards that are needed to complete such a project....I might try and find a welder who would be willing to help me out....we'll see....I have to finish the passenger side floor first....

Chevy brakes are:
1. More common
2. Outer axle stub shafts are much stronger
3. Wheel bearing hubs are stronger
4. Spindles are stronger
5. Locking hubs are stronger as they are incased in steel(they sit inside the wheel bearing hub as opposed to Scout locking hubs which bolt on externally.)

A Chevy brake install is a do-it-yourself type project but you need to have 6 bolt knuckles otherwise you have to drill everything out to Scout 8 bolt type knuckles. When doing a SOA and installing the PartsMike hysteer knuckles you have the option of Scout 8 bolt knuckles or Chevy 6 bolt.

You definetly don't want to skimp on the welds. Find a highly qualified welder or better yet a certified welder.

Sure woulda been nice to have this stuff around 35 years ago when I had my first SII

Man, we were inventing things as we went!! Wasn't near this pretty, but they were hell for stout

Gonna get the team to look all this over and start cypherin' on things...

Jeff,
One of the kids is telling me that we need to put wider, softer springs on the SII, and beef up the shocks to get a better ride. I'm inclined to stay with the stock springs when we put the new axles in. The thing won't be a daily driver, and I'd like it to handle the landings we tend to get when we top a dune. Can get the front a bit light at times. Will send you an example later.

I am curious about the cage kit on the Scout in the last series of pictures. Is that an IH Only North item for sale or is it home made? I really like the design.

This cage was built by the owners neighbor. We can build one very similiar to it. Please call for more info.
