Default Rear Disc Conversion

I was wondering if anyone has done a rear disc brake conversion on their Scout II and if they thought it was worth it. I just pulled my rear drums off and I need to replace pretty much everything. I was thinking if I was gonna go that far, I might look at the TSM Mfg kit. I don't know yet what pricing for everything is going to be. Just curious on results and if it's worth it right now.
thanks

It has been done thousands of times with either an emergency brake or without one. Any vehicle that originally came with a D44 is supported in the 4x4 community, Scouts included. There are weld on and bolt on kits available from most 4x4 suppliers. I am sure Jeff carries them or you can do your own with JY parts.

Braking capacity is increased, especially compared to non working POS drums. Compared to a tip-top drum system, probably not a huge difference.

They really shine off-road, where water/mud have less effect on your braking ability than drums, they also work equally well forward or backwards (as in backing down a steep hill).

Con: you effectively loose your e-brake. With smaller tires the caddy calipers with the built-in e-brake can be made to work (by reports), but for larger tire'd rigs they don't have all the much holding power.

You can do it yourself with all "new" parts for around $200. Or a couple of the lower-end kits out there aren't much more. Sometimes you get what you pay for, but some bigger "name brand" kits are just overpriced. Look, shop and research carefully.

What companies are around $200? I am not interested in SSBC. I've been looking at TSM but those aren't $200.

BCB used to have one that was under $300, don't know if John still offers them or what the current price it. Just looked on his web site, which hasn't been updated in years and he list like $300+ plus calipers, but IIRC when I was working on my own conversion he told be directly that it was cheaper than that, I guess you'll have to call him.

I don't know what Jeff has available, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him.

IIRC there was a guy on e-bay that had a fairly low priced set up.

Or its DYI. DYI will probably be the cheapest, but require the most effort sourcing the parts yourself (for me it required a couple trips to various parts houses and a little experimenting, it definitely wasn't one-stop shopping, although it couple be close to that). Thats really what your paying anyone else. Part prices, markup (got to stay in buisness some way), shipping and a little profit for the effort of making it easy for you.

IH Only North sells the TSM kit but we modify the caliper bracket in order to allow the stock parking brake cable to work with the new system - something no one else does. We have sold many of these kits with great results. I would not suggest buying ANY kit that does not have a built in parking brake. Don't sell yourself short by buying a cheaper kit as I almost lost my life due to the lack of a functioning parking brake.
